Australia and the UN
A founding member of the United Nations, Australia championed the cause of small and middlesized nations and was active in the drafting of the UN Charter so that it reflected the interests of all the nations of the world. In the 65 years since, Australia has continued to make a valuable contribution to the UN. We are as committed to the goals of the organisation now as we were then.
Australia is an active and significant contributor to the United Nations. We are the 12th largest contributor to the UN regular and peacekeeping budgets and a generous donor to a range of other UN bodies.
The role of the Australian Mission to the United Nations is to pursue Australia’s interests in the UN through advocacy of our views and promotion of our interests by negotiating with relevant member states to advance Australia’s key foreign policy objectives.
